3D printer history timeline: From the 1980's to Today The 3D printers history started from 1980's. At which time 3D printing technology was called Rapid Prototyping(RP) technology. This technology is called rapid prototyping because it processes the prototype in a very fast and cost effective manner. The very first patent application for Rapid Prototype(RP) was filed by Dr Kodama but the full patent specification was subsequently not filed before the one year deadline after the application. However the first patent was issued for stereolithography apparatus(SLA) which was first invented by Charles (Chuck) Hull. This patent was issued in 1986. Later, Hull became the co-founder of 3D Systems Corporation.
