3D printer history timeline: From the 1980's to Today

The 3D printers history started from 1980's. At which time 3D printing technology was called Rapid Prototyping(RP) technologyThis technology is called rapid prototyping because it processes the prototype in a very fast and cost effective manner. The very first patent application for Rapid Prototype(RP) was filed by Dr Kodama but the full patent specification was subsequently not filed before the one year deadline after the application. However the first patent was issued for stereolithography apparatus(SLA) which was first invented by Charles (Chuck) Hull. This patent was issued in 1986. Later, Hull became the co-founder of 3D Systems Corporation.

In 1987 Carl Deckard filed a patent in USA for the Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) RP process. This patent was issued in 1989. SLS was later licensed to DTM Inc, which was later acquired by 3D Systems. In 1989 Scott Crump filed a patent for Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM). The FDM patent was issued to Stratasys Inc which was co-founded by Scott Crump in 1992. In 1989 EOS GmbH was founded by Hans Langer in Germany. The main focused area of EOS R&D was laser sintering process. EOS GmbH created EOS "Stereos" System for industrial prototyping and production applications of 3D printing.

During these years many other 3D printing technology were emerging. Some examples are Ballistic Particle Manufacturing (BPM), Laminated Object Manufacturing (LOM), Solid Ground Curing (SGC) etc.
In 2000, the first working kidney is created by 3D printing. These days 3D printed kidney works perfectly and researchers are experimenting on rapid transplant of organs. The RepRap project which consists in a self-replicating 3D printer was initiated in 2004. In 2005 ZCorp launched the Spectrum Z510, the first high definition color 3D printer. In 2008 the first prosthetic limb was created by 3D printer. IN 2009 Sculpteo was created by using 3D printer.

These days extensive work is being done on 3D printing. In 2010 the first 3D printed prototype car Urbee is presented. Daniel Kelly's lab announces being able to 3D print bone in 2016.
